Description
According to Public Health Canada, “Mental illness is experienced by 1 in 3 Canadians during their lifetime. Many of us are affected by it either directly or indirectly through family, friends or colleagues.” A person skilled in Mental Health First Aid can make an immediate difference, by providing initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. This 12-hour course leads to a certificate from the Mental Health Commission of Canada and teaches participants practical and evidence-based skills in order to provide mental health first aid.
MHFA training will teach the participants to:
- Reduce stigma towards those experiencing mental health problems
- Recognize the symptoms, signs and risks associated with common mental health problems
- Engage confidently if a person may be in crisis or at risk of harm
- Guide a person toward appropriate professional help
- Provide immediate assistance to prevent the mental health problem from becoming more serious

Everyone can benefit from MHFA Canada training – members of the general public, caregivers, teachers, health services providers, university students, emergency workers, frontline workers who deal with the public, volunteers, human resource professionals, employers, community groups.
